Artistic Genesis and Motivations

Maki’s name, “Kahori,” which translates to “fragrance” symbolizes her deep-seated fascination with botany, an interest that is intrinsically entwined with her persona. She enthusiastically states, “The organic outlines and curves of plants and their evident energy captivate me.” Her reflections on plants surpass their visible shapes, underscoring her conviction that nature is laden with profound sentiments. Her works convey this ethos, meticulously capturing the essence and emotive power of plants, delivering a spiritual and emotive depth that goes beyond mere visual allure.

The Art of Motion and Creation

Maki’s artistic talent lies in her ability to give her works a vibrant and creative feel, and she excels in using unique colors and shapes. When asked about her creative process, she provided a distinctive perspective: “Dynamic forms frequently emerge in my mind. My hand naturally gravitates towards painting curves. Straight lines do not resonate with me. Perhaps I have a preference for the strong, streamlined shapes of tropical flowers, as opposed to less affection for small wildflowers; these thoughts might offer some clarity to the reader.”

Maki further shared personal reflections, allowing others to delve into her creative process. “While walking by the river, I suddenly had a thought: Why are the shapes of plant leaves so unique? If they exist merely for photosynthesis, why aren’t they just simple circles?” As she continued her walk, she pondered whether plants, like humans, aspire to stand out, be different, and express their emotions. “These myriad forms are perhaps proof of natural emotions,” she mused. “Maybe there is a latent emotion inside me that erupts with vitality and poignancy during the creation process.”

Confluence of Nature and Fantasia

In her recent masterpiece “KUTANism,” nature intertwines with whimsical fantasy, where Maki and Shiho Minami have crafted a surreal visual effect. As colorful lines unfold against a dark background, their surfaces adorned with complex patterns and designs, they seem to float in mid-air. The play of light and shadow makes these patterns appear vivid and full of life. The entire scene evokes a futuristic and science fiction feel, reminiscent of light-speed travel or the visual representation of a digital world. “When the space was shrouded in darkness, I envisioned a kind of ethereal illumination,” she recalls. Maki hopes her creations will awaken the audience’s latent imagination and fervor.
