Hiking up to Mt. Tamalpais (Mt. Tam for short) three or four times a week to catch the sunrise for the past 20 years, Tom Remus has acquired a deep appreciation of her natural beauty. The images of sunlight piercing through rolling clouds from the peak, a lone bird flying above a glistening lake, and fog blanketing the redwoods in the valley captured by Tom′s camera is truly surreal and exquisite. He patiently waits for the moment to take the perfect shot. Rather than thinking of himself as separate from the environment, he thinks the best shots are taken when his focus on the environment leads up to the moment when the distinction between himself and the environment blurs. At that point, the whole experience becomes one of wonder and delight. His complete embrace of nature flows fluidly in his photography which encompasses glorious colors and spectacular landscapes. Tom′s captivating photographs not only provide a new window on this beautiful, iconic mountain in the Bay Area but also immerse viewers in the wonderful world of nature.

Tom has hiked almost all the trails on Mt. Tam with his mirrorless Sony camera. For Tom, Mt. Tam is a living thing. Its inherent beauty during every season varies and calls for his attention all year round. By ceaselessly absorbing the moisture and air from the Pacific Ocean, Mt. Tam has some of the most breathtaking and dramatic scenes in the Bay Area. Mt. Tam also provides solace for Tom because of its balance, harmony, and uncompromising presence. The mountain′s profile looks like a goddess lying along the mountain′s side as if she was vigilantly looking after those who call the Bay Area home.

Borrowing from his experiences taking landscape photographs, Tom has also designed a series of digital artworks. By using light, colors, and shapes Tom has transformed the power of nature into a form of abstract art. The combination of shapes and contrast of colors are reminiscent of branches swaying in the wind or clouds moving in the sky. The artistic energy behind his designs forms mesmerizing and sensational visual effects that transfix viewer′s attention.
