Art by Puthur Wins High Acclaim
We are very excited to be able to interview Mr. Prakashan Puthur. He was recently appointed as an Ambassador for BRUSTRO, a high-end art supplies brand, by Creative Hands. He is also an alumnus of the prestigious Kerala School of Arts in Thalaserry, India.
Prakashan was born in India. He started to paint when he was six years old. It was the colorful natural scenes and ordinary people around him that attracted him to delve into painting. Currently, he lives in Oman, in the Middle East, engaged in teaching art and making paintings. Under his paintbrush, whether it is the true depiction of a simple character or the praise of nature, it is full of vitality. This artistic sentiment that unearthed the beauty and cultural implications of life from the ordinary, has brought him endless creative power and inspiration. Thus his work has attracted many followers and is cherished by art lovers from all over the world, including Kuwait, Egypt, Germany, Britain, and the United States.
While living in Oman, sweeping deserts, cargo camels, and ancient ruins have become new motifs in his paintings. Prakshan′s beautiful and revering illustrations of these scenes have presented a great ancient culture with a vast imagination.
However, Prakashan′s nostalgic feelings have grown even more so as the environment differs greatly from where he grew up. His longing for his wonderful childhood experiences has led him to frequently tap into memory for references. Swathed with vibrant colors, stroke by stroke, he brushes away his homesickness in the trees, a small house in the woods, lilies on a pond, and many other scenes. His intense emotions expressed in the visual scenes deeply penetrate into people′s hearts. The painting is no longer a painting anymore. It has become immortal.
Prakashan believes there are no shortcuts when it comes to painting. Nature is the best teacher and requires diligent practice. For example, if he wants to paint a tree branch, he would spend a long time sitting in front of it, observing the branch, before he paints it. Once he chooses the marking, the shade and colors come naturally. He then lets his emotions finish the painting. Prakashan thinks a painter can only make a painting real by tapping into his innermost feelings. When put into perspective, he asserts that an artist′s work is only 50% of the painting, the other 50% relies on the viewers to complete the whole painting. The viewers′ interpretations and responses are essential to make a painting great.
Prakashan does not stick to one medium to paint; he holds the belief that artists should not be bound by only one medium. A good artist should explore different mediums such as oil, acrylic, or watercolor and choose the one that can produce the best result for a particular scene.
For the past 30 years, his passion for painting led him to practice ferociously every day. His hard work has won him many fans and his artwork is sold around the world via social media. But Prakashan also thinks there is no shortcut in marketing either. When it comes to painting, do not think about followers. Only concentrate on the painting itself; the result will automatically attract followers. Art connects people. A piece of good art can attract people without heavy marketing.
Prakashan belongs to a traditional Kerala family and his parents want him to do a safe salary earning job. By defying their advice, he follows his own heart instead.
To be a better human being, Prakashan thinks children should be allowed to be with nature and put what they learn from nature into art, dancing, and music. The world is constantly changing, children should learn how to adapt to society as creatures do in nature. Now he has fulfilled his childhood dreams, making art, and having a happy family life. This is his advice to the youngsters – follow your own heart and make the best of it.
