Science

In the hushed corridors of CERNs sprawling complex near Geneva, a pursuit that once captivated medieval alchemists has found a modern scientific realization. Physicists using the ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) detector have observed the transformation of lead into gold. This transmutation, however, arises not from mystical incantations but from the elegant interplay of quantum mechanics and relativistic physics, as lead nuclei, accelerated to 99.999993 percent the speed of light, undergo near miss collisions.

The ALICE collaboration recently unveiled their findings in Physical Review Journals, offering a quantitative look at this extraordinary phenomenon occurring within the 27 kilometer ring of the Large Hadron Collider. Their research goes beyond scientific curiosity; it provides a profound demonstration of Einstein′s iconic equation, E equals mc squared, showcasing matter′s transformation under extreme conditions. ″It is impressive to see that our detectors can handle head on collisions producing thousands of particles, while also being sensitive to collisions where only a few particles are produced at a time,″ explains Marco Van Leeuwen, ALICE spokesperson. ″This enables the study of electromagnetic nuclear transmutation processes.″

The glowing energy streams represent the moment when physics transforms lead into gold through pure electromagnetic interaction, bringing ancient alchemical dreams into the realm of quantum reality.

Architecture

The global stage of the Osaka World Expo 2025 sees a compelling new architectural vision realized with the unveiling of the France Pavilion. Conceived through a collaborative vision between French architecture studio Coldefy and Italian design practice CRA Carlo Ratti Associati, the pavilion, open until October 13, 2025, presents itself not merely as an exhibition space but as an immersive ″theatre of life.″

A Choreographed Spatial Unfolding

Drawing inspiration from the nuanced art of mise en scène (the architectural arrangement and staging of a theatrical production), the Pavilion is meticulously designed as a fluid sequence of spaces. It guides visitors through an evolving series of perspectives that artfully mirror the inherent rhythms of daily existence: a beginning, a period of transition, moments of pause and reflection, and ultimately, a departure…

In the delicate interplay between ancestral wisdom and avant garde vision, few artists navigate this terrain with the profound elegance of Wanbing Huang. This Central Saint Martins alumna meticulously reenvisions China′s cultural legacy through a distinctly contemporary lens. Her practice, deeply interwoven with agricultural archetypes, inherited knowledge, and the very essence of natural materials, forges a bridge that transcends geographic boundaries.

Huang′s oeuvre elegantly embodies what she terms ″Eastern time,″ a philosophy honoring cyclical rhythms and the palpable weight of embodied memory, eschewing the constraints of linear progression. This allows her to distill and elevate quintessentially Chinese elements, crafting works that resonate far beyond any single cultural context.

The artist′s nuanced approach to material selection reveals a philosophy that transcends mere aesthetic considerations. Ramie, summer cloth, bamboo, and other traditional elements are not simply tools of her craft; they become ″organs of time″ and ″extensions of cultural memory.″ This refined sensibility was honed during…

The Divinatory Line Series 5, 2024 This collection unites ancient wisdom with contemporary vision, translating universal complexities into abstract totems. Inspired by the I Ching, the woven lines and structures create a visual language of cosmic intersections where space, time, and motion converge. Each piece mirrors the dynamic rhythms of the universe, similar to how trigrams and hexagrams condense vast principles into elegant forms. Through intricate weaves and geometric patterns, these works offer meditation on creation, dissolution, and the fundamental forces shaping reality by Wanbing Huang
